Abstract
A new diploid species of Melicytus, M. flexuosus, is described. It was formerly treated under M. angustifolius, a name based on an Australian specimen. Although it has some features in common with both shrubby and tree members of the genus, M. flexuosus has several unusual characters and occupies a unique morphological position. It occurs sparingly in scattered localities from central North Island to Stewart Island, and is confined to fertile alluvial habitats mainly on forest margins. It is associated with a distinct group of other shrubs and small trees, and is considered to be a relict and threatened species. Keywords
