Abstract
The optical absorption at various temperatures of an ytterbium‐doped yttrium gallium garnet is reported. The effect of a cubic and rhombic crystal field on the splitting of the free‐ion levels is calculated. A tentative interpretation of the fine details of the spectrum is given. Keywords
