Abstract
With the emergence, in some areas, of services for young substance misusers, problematic and sometimes dependent young people are presenting themselves at these agencies. Numbers around the country are difficult to quantify, but where specialist advice is offered a number of clients who fit into these categories will be seen. A picture of what makes a young person particularly vulnerable to substance misuse is beginning to emerge. With little guidance on what is effective treatment for this group, a clinic was set up to offer a service for substance users who were under 18 years of age. This paper focuses on the most dependent young people, a small proportion of the users of the service. A multi-disciplinary team with a holistic approach demonstrated that some young people could make significant improvements in many aspects of their lives, including their substance misuse.
