Abstract
First used in 1970 to detect hepatitis B antigen, this test is rapid, specific, and easy to interpret. Modified and refined, it is now showing great promise in detecting other important antigens and antibodies, which will make possible a more rational choice of antibiotics against specific infecting organisms. CIE also has prognostic value and provides information about the possible pathogenetic role of some antigens. Keywords
