Abstract
Although the standard deviation is the most widely used measure of the precision of quantitative methods, there is a need to re-examine the conditions necessary to obtain a meaningful estimate of this quantity. The importance of the material to be sampled, the sample size, the calculation of confidence intervals, and the segregation of outliers are discussed. Keywords
