The Pelvic Examination: A View from the Other End of the Table

Abstract
Lying on the examining table, feet in stirrups, confronting the examiner with the most personal parts of your anatomy, gives you plenty of time to think. Because I also perform pelvic examinations, what I thought about was what could be done to make me like them better. During the years certain parts of the procedure stood out as crucial. Speculum insertion is usually the most traumatic event in the examination. A detailed explanation of the sensations experienced and suggestions for alleviating some of them are presented. Other aspects of the doctor-patient relation during the pelvic examination are explored and suggestions for improving patients' perceptions of them are offered.
