Examined conforming behavior in the autokinetic situation for 98 undergraduates in male-female dyads under 4 degrees of acquaintance: (a) strangers, (b) strangers who were told they would like one another, (c) couples who had been dating for a short time, and (d) couples who had been dating for over a year or who were engaged or married. Both men and women conformed to the partner's judgment except in the group of long-term couples. All Ss were actually influenced by their partners, however, as evidenced by behavior in a subsequent alone session. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
