Abstract
Model and experimental investigations have been performed to examine a bed load formula and to predict two-dimensional beach transformation. Laboratory experiments were carried out to count the number of sand particles in motion and to measure water particle velocity at each instant of a wave cycle in a wave flume. The results were compared with a bed load formula derived by modifying the Madsen- Grant bed load formula and good agreement was seen. The bed load formula presented in this paper was examined using the data of beach profile change and the measurement of near bottom velocity in a sloping beach in the laboratory flume. The net transport formula of sediment derived from the bed load formula was applied to predict two-dimensional beach profile change and reasonable agreement was found in the offshore region with laboratory and field data. Keywords
