Abstract
The rate of adrenal growth in fetal pigs during the last third of gestation showed an abrupt rise in the last 20 days of intrauterine life. After birth the ratio of adrenal weight to body weight decreased with age. The ascorbic acid concentration of the adrenal gland rose abruptly during a few days before and after birth and showed no substantial changes thereafter. The ascorbic acid concentration of the liver, on the other hand, showed a rapid decline after reaching a maximum at 2–4 days after birth. It is suggested that the high activity of the pig adrenal cortex at birth is a result of intense progressive developnent in about the last sixth of fetal life.
