Abstract
Of various strains of fungi isolated from soil that showed antibiotic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, two species of Penicillium, producing culture filtrates of high antibacterial titre, were studied in more detail. The active substance, when crystallized, was considered to be claviformin (clavacin, clavatin, patulin). Studies on the production of the antibiotic, its assay, and its extraction from culture filtrates are described. Keywords
