Abstract
A comparison was made of low (LTA) and high (HTA) tolerance of ambiguity Ss on mean semantic differential ratings of contradictory and noncontradictory adjective-noun concept-combinations. It was hypothesized that a group of Ss scoring lowest on a 16-item tolerance of ambiguity scale would make more extreme ratings of all concept-combinations than a group scoring highest on tolerance of ambiguity. It was also hypothesized that the HTA group would shift its ratings of contradictory concept-combinations closer to the mean of its original ratings of the single concepts comprising the combinations. It was found that the LTA group made more extreme ratings of all concept-combinations and that the HTA group shifted its ratings of contradictory combinations more toward the mean of its original ratings than did the LTA group. In addition, the HTA group made a greater number of compromises of original single concept ratings in its ratings of contradictory concept-combinations than did the LTA group.
