Abstract
The characteristics of newly-formed connective tissue are studied in implanted polystyrene sponges one and 5 months after implantation into rats aged 2, 4 and 13 months. Four weeks after implantation the newly-formed collagen, as judged from the acid extractability of hydroxyproline,is the same in all age groups. Four months after implantation the total amount of collagen and the total hexosamine content falls, and also the acid extractability of hydroxyproline decreases. In 13-month-old rats, following 5 months of implantation, there is a slight fall in acid extractability of hydroxyproline as compared to the youngest age group (p < 0.05). No change in hexosamine extractability was found. Keywords
