Abstract
By applying the Mie-Grüneisen equation of state to measurements of the compression of solids by strong shock waves, it is possible to determine the volume dependence of the cohesive energy. The method for carrying out this deduction is presented along with a detailed exposition of the underlying assumptions. The method is applied to six metals Be, Al, Co, Ni, Cu, and Ag for which the experimental data are most extensive. The volume dependence of the cohesive energy for these six metals is presented in both analytical and graphical form. Keywords
