THE TIME AT WHICH CASEIN BEGINS TO BE FORMED IN THE BREAST DURING PREGNANCY

Abstract
Udders of cattle at various stages of their first pregnancy were extracted in boiling water. These extracts were precipitated at pH 4.6 and the precipitates dissolved with dilute alkali at pH 7.0. Complement fixation tests with the solutions thus obtained, using a potent anti-casein serum, showed that casein was demonstrable in all udders after the 24th wk. of pregnancy (estimated) and in no udder of heifers pregnant less than 20 wks.
