Abstract
The standard direct strain method was used to determine the effect on Young's modulus of quenching beta brass in a saturated salt solution. The measurements were made on one beta brass single crystal with orientation function f(l, m, n)=0.121. The measurements were performed at the temperatures of 25°, −30° −90°, and −196°C. From the measurements the reciprocal of Young's modulus was calculated and two anomalous points were determined. The increase in Young's modulus for the quench temperature of 275°C was attributed to isolated wrong pairs of atoms. The increase in Young's modulus at the quench temperature of 450°C was attributed to disorder being quenched in.
