Abstract
The 10-minute individual intelligence test for naval recruits at Newport consists of 4 subparts which may reveal scatter of mental-age scores. Of the subjects showing appreciable scatter, 27% were later discharged for psychiatric reasons. Thus scatter may be indicative of psychopathy, but it is not dependably diagnostic. Factors of culture, training, and special proficiency may also produce scatter. Certain scatter patterns may reveal specific abnormalities; e.g., psychopathic personalities score significantly lower on verbal tests (requiring rapport) than on written tests.
