Abstract
Arguments for or against the re-allocation of land in Australia's rangelands from one use to another are frequently short on data and long on emotion. Although data presented in this paper are not sufficient to resolve these arguments, they do suggest some options for closer examination.Starting from a model for calculating viability prospects for pastoralism in the rangelands, the paper examines the extent of grazing and the pastoral viability prospects for the areas devoted to each of the major land uses. Possibilities for changes in use in each of the states are also described. Keywords
