Active attenuation of noise—The monopole system

Abstract
Towards solving the noise pollution problem of the human environment, proposals were made to attenuate noise propagating down a duct by adding an antiphase copy of the primary noise. In a number of configurations, 2 or 3 sources were used to produce the secondary noise, but a successful system with 1 source was not realized. The conventional monopole system is analyzed, and the reason why this type of mnonopole secondary source is not a practical solution is investigated. A modified system with a new solution of the problem is developed.
