Abstract
4-nucleon spectra are discussed in terms of pairing and quarteting effects. It is then shown that in a single large j-shell the loss of angular overlap between nucleon orbitals due to the exclusion principle entails the existence of 2 proton-2 neutron structures or « quartets » mutually weakly interacting. Estimates of the effect are extracted from the nuclear mass table. The consequences of quarteting for the excited states of medium and heavy nuclei are finally discussed
