MYASTHENIA GRAVIS AND HYPERTHYROIDISM: REPORT OF TWO CASES AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Abstract
Although less than 100 cases have been reported in which hyperthyroidism and myasthenia gravis were shown to exist in the same human, such coexistence is probably not infrequent. Myasthenia gravis and hyper-thyroidism have many clinical features in common. When either disease is present, the other should be suspected. Treatment of thyrotoxicosis with iodine or other antithyroid drugs may precipitate a myasthenic crisis. Concurrent treatment of myasthenia gravis can prevent this. Pathologic changes may be found in both the thymus and thyroid glands.
