Abstract
Short-term kinetics of calcium, strontium, barium and radium were studied in adult rabbits using 47Ca, 85Sr, 133Ba and 226Ra. The urinary and fecal excretion rates were determined as well as the magnitude of exchangeable pool (E) and skeletal addition-rate (A). The latter was several times larger for Ba and Ra than for Ca and Sr. The magnitude of the exchangeable space E was larger for Sr, Ba and Ra than for Ca, roughly by a factor of 2–3. The authors compare the metabolic kinetics of four alkaline earth elements in rabbits with that in other species and discuss possible reasons for the enlarged value of A for barium and radium. Keywords
