Abstract
A study has been made, using the polarizing microscope, of the magnetic colloid patterns deposited on the magnetic domain structures of uniaxial materials. The colloid is rendered birefringent by the local stray fields and so reveals the phenomenon of interference colours. The formation and properties of the colours are discussed. Keywords
