Abstract
The name Ångström is extremely well known to physicists, even if only as applied to a unit of length. A hundred years ago A. J. Ångström (1814–1874) was working on the measurement of the wavelengths of elements in the spectrum of the Sun, the results being published at Uppsala in 1868 under the title Recherches sur le spectre solaire. The measurements were performed using four diffraction gratings made by "M. Nobert", and the results were such that, after careful calibration, and allowing for a subsequently discovered inexactitude of the Uppsala standard metre, they compare very favourably with modern figures.
