Abstract
Communication educators have long recommended the use offormal discussion procedures by members of small decision-making groups. However, most of the research that has been performed examining the value offormal procedures has been ambiguous or inconsistent. The goal of this article is to examine a series of questions concerning the use of formal procedures, interpret research relevant to these questions, and describe what needs to be determined before the use offormal procedures can be defended on empirical grounds. Keywords
