Abstract
An eddy current damping device containing a metal disk moving in a magnetic field of cylindrical symmetry is studied. Analytic equations are presented for the damping which is produced by permanent magnets for a wide range of geometrical parameters of the device. The geometry leading to the maximal damping under size constraints is obtained. Keywords
