Influence of 17-Alpha-Hydroxyprogesterone-N-Caproate upon Post-Partum Reproductive Activity in the Bovine1

Abstract
The effect of 22 injections of 100 mg. of 17 - alpha - hydroxyprogesterone - n - caproate (Delalutin), on alternate days beginning with the day of calving, on uterine involution, ovulation, estrus, and conception rate was studied in 39 Holstein and Jersey cows. Average intervals from parturition to uterine involution were 42.0 and 27.5 days (P<.01); to first estrus, 70.0 and 47.9 days (P<.01); and to first ovulation, 62.3 and 40.7 days (P<.01) for the treated and untreated groups, respectively. Treated cows exhibited first estrus an average of 28 days after the end of Delalutin treatment. Variation for the interval from parturition to involution was significantly increased, while the variation for the interval from parturition to ovulation was significantly decreased. Treatment had no significant effect upon the variation for the interval from parturition to estrus. Conception rates were not affected by treatment, being 70.6% and 69.6% for the treated and untreated, respectively. Copyright © . .
