Abstract
In this paper experiments on the onset of thermal instability in rotating layers of mercury are described. In agreement with the recent theoretical work of Chandrasekhar the experiments show that the instability sets in as oscillations of increasing amplitude. Both the temperature gradients at which the instability sets in and periods of the oscillations in the marginal state are in agreement with the theoretical predictions. Keywords
