Abstract
Three 50 t silage stacks were made from a common source with direct-cut lucerne with the following additions at ensiling: 85% formic acid 4.6 l/t (F); commercial formalin b.3 1/t, 85% formic acid 2.1 1/t (FF); nil (U). The chemical compositions of the treated silages were similar, but both contained more OM, less ammonia, and less volatile fatty acids than the U silage. Highest intakes by sheep and weight gains by cattle were obtained on the F silage. Keywords
