Lifting of vibrational degeneracies in a crystal field

Abstract
This paper gives an account of the calculation of the magnitude of the splitting of the bending modes of linear triatomic ions, HF 2 and N 3 due (a) to the electrostatic field of the crystal containing the ions and (b) to the coupling of oscillators in a primitive unit cell. The observed splittings are used to calculate the magnitude of the charge moving during the vibration.
