Abstract
Several reports of diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage associated with glomerulonephritis have appeared in recent years. Ernest Goodpasture (1) appears to have described the first case in 1919. The patient was an 18-year-old male with "typical influenza" at the height of the 1918 to 1919 influenza pandemic. After initial improvement he developed persistent hemoptysis, anemia, and a bilateral pulmonary infiltrate. The total illness lasted 6 weeks. Autopsy revealed extensive intra-alveolar hemorrhage, scattered alveolar necrosis and, unexpectedly, a proliferative glomerulonephritis. Since then at least 92 additional cases (2-10) have been described (see the review by Benoit and associates (2) for references to theKeywords
