The Unreliability of Prognostic Criteria in Osteosarcoma

Abstract
A study of the cases of seven long-term survivors from a series of 39 cases of osteosarcoma has been analyzed. Parameters considered were age, sex, location and size of tumor, duration of symptoms, histologic grading, and treatment. The authors were unable to identify any differences between survivors and non-survivors except for a direct relationship between average duration of symptoms prior to definitive diagnosis and survival. The five-year and tenyear survival rates were 23.3 and 16.7%, respectively, consistent with other recently-reported studies. An unusual case of long-term survival with osteosarcoma in a patient with Paget’s disease is included.
