PULMONARY MONILIASIS

Abstract
Pulmonary moniliasis is a rarely recognized infection which has 3 clinical forms: Mild (which resembles chronic bronchitis), intermediate, and severe (which may resemble lobar or bronchopneumonia). The disease is diagnosed by clinical manifestations accompanying each of the 3 forms, radiological evidence, the consistent finding of large numbers of Candida albicans in carefully collected sputum specimens, and the absence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the sputum. Beyond mycologic diagnosis, laboratory findings are not specific. Treatment has been found uniformly difficult and unsatisfactory. Six cases, one with autopsy findings, are presented in detail to illustrate the various forms of the disease and the courses they may follow.
