A “Quick Trap” for Area Sampling of Arthropods in Grassland Communities

Abstract
A spring-operated trap for area sampling of arthropods in grass communities is described. The trap is designed to pounce on the area to be sampled when triggered from a distance, thus avoiding the danger of the sampler and his equipment driving active and easily disturbed animals from the area to be sampled. The arthropods on the sample area are confined until removed by a vacuum collector. The method is compared with other methods of sampling, including 2 forms of sweep net and a vacuum collector used in other ways. A high degree of efficiency for the new trap is demonstrated.
