8 Gbit/s transmission over 76 km of optical fibre using a directly modulated 1.3 μm DFB laser

Abstract
We report an optical transmission experiment at a data rate of 8 Gbit/s over an unrepeatered distance of 76 km. The transmitter was a directly modulated, 1.3 µm-wavelength, distributed-feedback laser. The receiver employed an avalanche photodiode and a high-impedance GaAs MESFET preamplifier.
