Abstract
Why do injection-drug users continue to engage in risky behavior in the midst of the AIDS epidemic? Although efforts to reduce such behavior have resulted in declines in the reported frequency of needle-sharing and, to a lesser degree, unprotected sexual activity,1-3 this behavior continues to account for an unacceptably high rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection4,5. Mortality data from our longitudinal study of HIV transmission and associated behavior among injection-drug users in Philadelphia provide some insights. Keywords
