Abstract
Two regions of absorption have been discovered in the near ultraviolet spectrum of thionylimide (HNSO). These are a long series of diffuse bands between 2690 and 2387 Å, merging into a continuum with maximum extinction coefficient near 2170 Å, and a weak structureless absorption between 3250 and 3500 Å. The vibrational pattern of the 2690–2387 Å system is almost unchanged on deuteration, indicating that the electronic excitation is centered at the sulfur atom. Keywords
