Formation and structural assignments of four trimethylcyclopentadienes

Abstract
Thermolysis of isobornyl acetate in an inert gas atmosphere in a tube reactor, at temperatures between 420° and 480°C yields four trimethylcyclopentadienes as well as other compounds. Their isolation is described. Their structures were established by hydrogenation and by spectroscopic methods.A number of vicinal, allylic, homoallylic and long‐range coupling constants were obtained from the NMR spectra. The formation of 2,5,5‐trimethylcyclopentadiene from bornene is discussed.
