Abstract
The penicillin previously reported (Jour. Bact. 57: 415-422. 1949) to be firmly bound by resting S. aureus cells remains largely bound during subsequent growth in penicillin-free medium. At low penicillin concns. (0.01 U./ ml.) penicillin uptake is unchanged in amt. but requires many hrs. for completion. During growth in the presence of penicillin, cells continue to bind penicillin at a rate indicating more rapid synthesis of penicillin-binding component than of cell substance. At penicillin concns. too low to inhibit growth, this synthesis is apparently more rapid than the penicillin-binding reaction. Keywords
