Abstract
Direct evidence of the reduction of trivalent rare-earth (RE) ions by irradiation and reoxidation of the divalent ions on subsequent heating is presented from optical absorption and spectrophotofluorescence measurements on CaSO4 phosphors doped with Ce, Eu, Dy or Tm. Such evidence provides strong support for a model for thermoluminescence processes in CaSO4(RE) phosphors which has already been predicted.
