Abstract
The cytological behavior of F1 plants from the cross Phaseolus lunatus cv. Fordhook X P. polystachyus was investigated with the parent species serving as controls. In both parents n = 11 chromosomes, and meiosis is normal. The hybrid is almost completely sterile; less than one one-seeded pod per 1000 flowers, or less than 0.1% fertility. In the hybrid such meiotic irregularities occur as non-pairing of chromosomes, early disjunction, presence of bridges and laggards with unequal distribution of chromosomes at anaphase, and polyspory. These irregularities are suggested as being responsible for high pollen sterility in the F1 plants. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
