Abstract
Barrett, E. J. (Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Brisbane, Australia. Q.4006). Intratypic antigenic variation among strains of the group B arboviruses Murray Valley encephalitis and Kunjin. Amer J Epidem 93: 212–220, 1971.— Five strains of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus isolated from man in 1951 (southern Australia), 1956 (Papua) and 1969 (probably north Western Australia) and from mosquitoes in 1960 and 1961 (north Queensland), and four strains of Kunjin virus isolated from mosquitoes in 1960, 1963 and 1966 and from a bird in 1966 (all north Queensland) were compared with each other and on occasion with other group B viruses by several serologic techniques (hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), neutralization, Casals' grid HI, antibody absorption, immunodifusion and immunoelectrophoresis). Four strains of MVE virus were indistinguishable by all tests; the fifth, isolated in 1969, was distinct especially by neutralization tests. Kunjin virus strains gave individual characteristic reactions, especially by immunodiffusion tests, suggesting quantitative differences in certain antigens, although absorption tests indicated that each strain contained qualitatively the same antigens.
