Abstract
Four strains of Neisseria obtained from the human nasopharynx can ferment maltose but not glucose. Comparison of the O2 consumption of one of these strains and that of N. sicca, which ferments both maltose and glucose, shows similar values for the 2 forms when grown in maltose; in glucose the value for N. sicca is the same as in maltose, while the direct fermenting strain shows a consumption only slightly greater than that of endogenous respiration. Keywords
