Abstract
Protein loss from the small intestinal mucosa was measured in 12 subjects by means of a washing technique. The method effectively prevented contamination of the segment under study with the protein- and enzyme-rich digestive secretions from the stomach, biliary tree and pancreas. In 12 subjects the loss of protein from a 5-cm segment of duodenal mucosa was 2.1 mg per minute or 3.0 g per 24 hours. This rate of loss was very high and for the entire small intestine suggested a loss of tens of grams per 24 hours. Keywords
