Anabolic Hormones in Hyperparathyroidism

Abstract
The studies reported here were prompted by efforts to ameliorate or control the metabolic abnormalities of a patient with hyperparathyroidism due to a functional disseminated parathyroid carcinoma. The impressive loss of bone substance and the concomitant soft tissue wasting in this patient suggested the possibility that treatment with anabolic hormones might ameliorate or reverse these changes. He received, therefore, two short courses of pituitary growth hormone and testosterone propionate for a month. This therapy resulted in a significant shift in the biochemical abnormalities toward normal and thus a more favorable clinical outlook.
