Sulfhydryl-Containing Agents and the Effects of Ionizing Radiations

Abstract
1200 male and female Swiss albino mice were irradiated with 800 r in one exposure (radiation factors 1000 kv., 3 ma., 31.2 r/min. in air h.v.l=2.2 mm. Pb). Glutathione was injected in amts. varying from 5-20 mg. in saline in 0.1-0.2 cc. (pH between 2.9 and 6.0) prior to and /or after irradiation. 200 mice were given saline injns. only and 200 mice received no medication. The mortality rate decreased definitely in the glutathione treated group as compared with the non-medicated irradiated group (63.8% and 40-46% mortality rate, respectively). Glutathione-treated animals lost less wt. and recovered it more rapidly than did the surviving irradiated control. Glutathione-treated survivors showed a higher resistance against traumatization than survivors which were not medicated.
