Factors Influencing Activated Sludge Properties

Abstract
Activated sludge dewatering and thickening properties were found to depend upon the concentration of bio-polymers in solution. Sludge conditioning agents were found to function by coagulation of solution polymers. Solution polymers could also be reduced by biological means. If activated sludge is held under anaerobic conditions then followed by aeration the polymers were found to decline. The rate and extent of polymer decay was dependent upon the dissolved oxygen concentration.
