Some Factors Affecting Metabolic Rate in an Antarctic Mite

Abstract
Determinations of live wt-specific O2 consumption (metabolic rate) in adults of the Antarctic terrestrial mite A. antarcticus (Michael) showed that starvation resulted in metabolic suppression. Food materials influenced metabolic rates and depletion of O2 concentration in Cartesian Divers resulted in decreased O2 uptake. The effects of sex and reproductive condition on metabolic rates were explicable on the basis of wt differences between males, gravid females and non-gravid females. Long periods of laboratory culture resulted in lower wt and metabolic rates, but short term temporal variation in wt-specific O2 consumption within individuals was also demonstrated. O2 consumption rates of adult A. antarcticus were measured at -4.degree. C and was slightly lower than values previously measured at 0.degree. C.
