Abstract
This paper describes the first stages of oxidation of nickel. Under suitable experimental conditions small isolated crystallites are formed prior to the occurrence of a continuous oxide film. The shape, size, and number of the crystallites depends on the crystallographic orientation of the underlying metal. The specific features of the oxidation of grain boundaries are discussed and a tentative explanation of the observed phenomena is advanced. Keywords
