Abstract
Subconjunctival injn. of crystalline penicillin (20,000 U./ml.) in rabbits gave an adequate therapeutic conc. in the ocular tissues. Increased dosage to 50,000 U./ml. resulted in a conc. greater than would have been expected on a proportionate basis. The conc. was higher and more lasting when 0.1% epi-nephrine was used as a solvent for the penicillin. Adequate levels were maintained for about 6 hrs. Epinephrine acts by preventing the rapid elimination of penicillin from its subconjunctival depot. These exptl. findings were supported by observations on 5 human eyes. Keywords
