Abstract
Accidents are currently the single greatest cause of death for children in the United States.1 Twenty percent of these accidental deaths of children less than age 5 years and 5% of the accidental deaths of children 5 to 19 years of age are due to drowning.2 For each drowning, there are other nonfatal immersion accidents in which there is a high morbidity.3,4 Immersion accidents in whirlpool spas (Jacuzzi) and hot tubs present several types of danger to children. This paper reviews experience in this area and describes several unique injuries associated with these recreational facilities. During the last five years there were 23 admissions to Cottage Hospital of children less than age 18 for drowning or near drowning in the Santa Barbara, CA area (population 180,000).Keywords
